Please check your eligibility to join this short course and time-tabling details with the Faculty of Engineering. The short course will only be delivered subject to a minimum number of applications being received.

If you're working in automation, robotics, or control and want to upskill with a flexible, high-level course, this award is designed for you. Delivered entirely online, it introduces you to core concepts in both continuous-time and discrete-time control systems. You鈥檒l explore how to model dynamic systems using transfer functions and state-space methods, analyze system stability and performance, and design controllers such as PID and state feedback regulators. With practical applications in industries like semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, maritime, and water treatment, this course equips you with relevant tools for real-world challenges. Through simulations and hands-on projects, you'll gain experience using software like MATLAB and Simulink, strengthening your problem-solving and technical communication skills. This course aligns with the Department鈥檚 focus on intelligent systems and is part of the MSc in Intelligent Systems, Signals and Control. It鈥檚 an ideal step if you want to lead innovation in the Maltese automation industry and beyond.

Semester 1

Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s)

SCE5103 Continuous-time Control Systems 5 ECTS
SCE5104 Discrete-time Control Systems 5 ECTS

This programme of study is governed by the Regulations for Micro-credentials, 2024.

By the end of the course, you will have a solid grasp of both continuous and discrete control systems. You will be able to:

Subject Knowledge and Understanding

  • Develop transfer function and state-space models for linear time-invariant systems;
  • Use appropriate analytical tools to assess the behaviour and performance of dynamic systems - both open and closed loop - in time and frequency domains;
  • Identify and apply suitable control design techniques for specific engineering challenges.

Intellectual Development

  • Strengthen your critical thinking by working through complex control problems. The course fosters a structured approach to problem-solving, encouraging you to evaluate various control strategies and integrate theoretical knowledge with practical solutions.

Key and Transferable Skills

  • Enhance your ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and manage time effectively to meet deadlines for assignments and projects.
